Responsibilities

Under close supervision as an apprentice, perform progressively skilled work in the inspection, repair, and maintenance of rail yard and heavy equipment; and perform other related work.

 II.  Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following.  To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  Other minor duties may be assigned. 

  • Assisting a journey level mechanic and receiving training in the repair and maintenance of rail can container handlers, telehandlers, rail car movers, forklifts, tractors, pumps, air compressors, diesel engines, and similar equipment.
  • Learning to operate and maintain tools and machinery used in the operations, repair, and maintenance of rail yard equipment.
  • Inspecting equipment to locate and determine the extent of necessary repairs and the corrective action necessary.
  • Diagnosing faults or malfunctions, adjusting equipment, and repairing or replacing defective parts, components, or systems.
  • Completing maintenance tasks such as lubricating and cleaning engines.
  • Writing labor, time, and parts on repair orders.
  • Testing vehicles before and after repair procedures.

    • Required to use motor coordination with finger dexterity (such as keyboarding, machine operation, etc) part of the work day;
    • Required to exert physical effort in handling objects less than 30 pounds usually;
    • Required to be exposed to physical occupational risks (such as cuts, burns, exposure to toxic chemicals, etc) rarely;
    • Required to be exposed to physical environment which involves dirt, odors, noise, weather extremes or similar elements usually;
    • Normal setting for this job is: shop setting.

Qualifications

Requirements

  • Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and legally eligible to work in the United States.
  • A valid driver’s license is required. CDL a plus.
  • At least 5 years of experience in job duties.
  • Sanitation or construction industry experience a plus.
  • Computer diagnostic experience as diesel technician a plus.
  • Experience with troubleshooting/repairing DPF systems diagnostic software such as Premium Tech Tool (Mack), Allison transmission, Cummins, CAT, Peterbilt, and Paccar.
  • Working knowledge of applicable DOT and OSHA standards and regulations.
  • Must be able to speak and read English well enough to converse with colleagues, drivers and dispatch, and be able to make legible entries on reports and records.
  • Must be able to meet the physical and safety requirements of the position.
  • Must be able to provide own tools

Salary Range Minimum

USD $40.00/Hr.
