The Safety Director is responsible for leading and driving all facets of safety in the designated market area. This role is accountable for compliance with IWS’s Health and Safety/Transportation Compliance Programs and for aligning company standards with all applicable legislation. The goal is to ensure programs are clearly communicated and understood, providing a safe workplace. The position reinforces safety and compliance for front-line staff and reports directly to the Market Area Vice President of Operations, with a dotted-line responsibility to the Corporate Vice President of Safety to ensure the deployment of policies, programs, and tools.

· Promote a positive safety culture through leadership by example.
· Analyze safety performance, recommend improvements, and drive positive change.
· Communicate safety requirements and improvements to leadership and Operations.
· Develop, monitor, and disseminate company safety goals and benchmarks.
· Manage work assignments, development, and training of safety supervisors.
· Partner with all levels of the organization, particularly the Market Area VP, to implement safety procedures and corrective actions.
· Oversee safety functions across multiple sites in the designated market.
· Conduct incident investigations and reviews to determine root causes and corrective actions.
· Manage employee injury care using tele-nurse programs and coordinate medical attention with Operations.
· Ensure monthly safety meetings are held at each market location, including content delivery and frontline engagement.
· Implement leading indicator programs and analyze data to drive safety performance.
· Manage and participate in facility audits (transfer stations, MRFs, Rail Yards, Hauling Depots).
· Conduct and manage route observations/audits and Safety Lanes (compliance audits); report findings and recommend corrections.
· Communicate site-specific safety programs across all management levels.
· Investigate safety concerns and recommend corrective measures.
· Support Risk Management in implementing Loss Prevention measures.
· Review and share Behavioral Analysis findings regularly.
· Recommend coaching materials to Operations management.
· Ensure and manage all regulatory compliance (DOT, OSHA, BIC, DSNY,
Bachelor’s degree in Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, Environmental Science, or equivalent combination of education and experience; CIP certification is a plus.
· 5+ years of progressive Health & Safety experience.
· Strong preference for candidates with sanitation industry experience.
· Deep understanding of federal, state, and local Health & Safety and Transportation regulations (e.g., DOT, OSHA, NYC BIC, DSNY, NYDEC/NJDEP).
· Strong analytical and organizational skills in a fast-paced environment.
· Excellent communication, collaboration, and leadership abilities.
· Ability to lead or contribute to special projects.
· Proficiency in MS Office and safety-related applications.
· Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
